One US cup is 8 fluid ounces of volume whatever is in it, but what it weighs in ounces depends on the ingredient: a cup of peanut butter weighs about 9.1 oz. Why these two are not the same. Peanut butter is thick, dense and stubbornly sticky, so one US cup weighs about 258 grams. It is one of the least pleasant ingredients to measure by volume, since it clings to the cup and refuses to pour or scrape out cleanly. Weighing straight into the bowl is far tidier: zero the scale with the bowl on it, then spoon in peanut butter until you hit the grams.
